What Is Liposuction?

Liposuction, also known as lipoplasty, removes excess fat deposits from targeted areas that fail to respond to proper diet and regular exercise. This procedure uses specialised instruments to break apart fat deposits and remove them with minimal scarring and a shorter recovery time than more invasive body contouring surgeries.

Areas traditionally treated during the liposuction procedure include the thighs, hips, buttocks, abdomen, arms, legs, and chest (often used for gynaecomastia in men). The fat that is removed during liposuction can also be used for fat transfers to enhance another area of the body, such as with a butt lift.

Liposuction Candidates

Ideal candidates should be at a stable weight and close to their ideal weight. Patients can continue to lose weight following treatment, but any weight gain can undo treatment results. Patients who have good muscle tone and firm, elastic skin are able to achieve the most significant effects. Most importantly, ideal candidates should have realistic expectations for the procedure. Liposuction can sculpt and refine your shape, but it will not eliminate the need for a healthy diet and exercise and should not be used as a form of weight loss. The Liposuction Procedure

Dr. Horn provides both traditional and ultra sound-assisted liposuction treatments. He performs both types of techniques under general anaesthesia and as outpatient procedures. Each procedure will involve small incisions near the treatment area and will cause minimal scarring.

The surgery will typically last about one to three hours depending on the size of the area being treated. If Dr. Horn is able to remove enough fat to make a difference, he can process it for transfer and inject it into your buttocks as part of a Brazilian butt lift.

Traditional Liposuction

For a traditional procedure, we will inject a specialised saline solution containing medication to control bleeding and minimise pain. Dr. Horn will then make small incisions to allow him to access your fat deposits. He will insert a thin, hollow tube called a cannula through the incisions and move it back and forth in a controlled motion to loosen fat deposits. The fat cells will mix with the saline solution and then be vacuumed from the body through the cannula.

Ultrasound-Assisted Liposuction

Although very similar, the ultrasound-assisted method of liposuction uses a special instrument that emits ultrasound energy. The fat cells are liquefied by the ultrasound energy as the cannula passes through them. This procedure is often much gentler than traditional liposuction and can cause less blood loss, shortening recovery time.

Recovery from Liposuction

After the procedure, Dr. Horn will provide you specific instructions to follow during your recovery. Patients are typically able to return home the same day. For the first three weeks following surgery, you will need to wear a compression garment to control swelling, speed healing, and help your skin shrink to its new contours. We can prescribe pain medication for any discomfort that you may experience.

Pain and bruising should subside in two weeks, and you can resume most normal activities in three weeks. Because of swelling and the time needed for the skin to reshape to the body's new contours, you may require up to three months to see the full results of the procedure.
