Tips to Prepare Yourself for Surgery & Recovery

Planning for Surgery Can Improve Your Recovery Time

If you have a scheduled surgery coming up, taking the steps to prepare yourself beforehand can increase your chances of a successful outcome and shorten your recovery time. Don't just wait for your surgery date to fast for anesthesia, take some action in the days or weeks prior to ensure you're prepared.

Eat a Healthier Diet

In the days leading up to your surgery, make sure to eat foods that are rich in vitamins and minerals. Fruits and vegetables can help with overall inflammation before, during and after surgery. Avoid red meats and processed foods as they are more difficult for the body to break down. Eating healthier can prepare your body for the shock of surgery that is approaching.

Exercise Regularly

Whether it's a walk every day or working out a few times a week at the gym, exercising regularly can increase your chances of walking quickly post surgery. Many doctors will not discharge you until you are getting close to your preoperative level of activity, meaning you can go home sooner if you exercise in advance!

Make Sure to Hydrate

It is recommended to drink at least six 8-ounce glasses of water a day when you are preparing for an upcoming surgery. Your body needs to be properly hydrated in order to maintain its temperature, remove wastes and lubricate your joints, all of which are important before, during and after surgery.

Talk to Your Doctor

Before surgery, talk to your doctor and ensure you know exactly what to expect. Go over your list of current medications to ensure your blood pressure, blood sugar and overall health maintain controlled during and after surgery. If you are diabetic, the better your sugars are controlled, the better recovery you can expect.

Pack a Bag

Regardless of how long you expect to be in the hospital, pack a bag to ensure you have everything you need to stay comfortable. Make sure you have loose-fitting clothing, a glasses case or supplies for contact lenses and any necessary medical devices, like an inhaler for asthma. If you are expected to stay overnight, pack a toothbrush, toothpaste, socks, extra clothing and slippers to keep your feet warm!

Prepare Your Home

Even if you have a loved one ready to take care of you after surgery, preparing your home ahead of time can be extremely beneficial. Make sure you have a comfortable place to rest, your fridge and pantry are stocked with all of the essentials and you have all the things you need for a safe and relaxing recovery.
